Al centro dei romanzi di Abdulrazak Gurnah ci sono, infatti, la migrazione e lo spostamento, in particolare dall’Africa. L’appartenenza, la memoria e il colonialismo sono i temi più ricorrenti delle sue opere.
I suoi romanzi rifuggono dalle descrizioni stereotipate e aprono il nostro sguardo su un’Africa orientale culturalmente diversificata e sconosciuta a molti in altre parti del mondo.

L’interesse per questi argomenti nasce dalla sua esperienza di vita: nato nel 1948 a Zanzibar, Gurnah all’età di diciotto anni scappa dai conflitti in corso sull’isola per rifugiarsi in Gran Bretagna.
È in Inghilterra che ha iniziato a scrivere, in una terra straniera a cui ha richiesto asilo. L’autore è il primo immigrato dei suoi libri e ha vissuto in prima persona l’esperienza dello spostamento, con il conseguente trauma di doversi costruire una nuova identità per adattarsi ad una realtà diversa.
Professore universitario di Letteratura Inglese e Postcoloniale, il premio Nobel deve la sua fama a diversi romanzi tra i quali ricordiamo Paradiso (1994), Sulla riva del mare (2001) e Il disertore (2005).
Gurnah ha voluto sottolineare quanto sia importante per l’Europa accogliere i rifugiati dell’Africa. “Molte di queste persone che vengono, fuggono per necessità e anche, francamente, perché hanno qualcosa da dare” e quindi sono una vera ricchezza, secondo lo scrittore.
“Il mondo è molto più violento di quanto non fosse negli anni Sessanta, per questo ora c’è una maggiore pressione sui Paesi più sicuri” ha poi continuato.
Il ringraziamento di Abdulrazak è stato, dunque, un inno all’ospitalità e all’accettazione dell’altro, nella consapevolezza e nella speranza di una profonda solidarietà tra gli uomini.
