Mammifero dell’America centro-meridionale, cugino del bradipo e del formichiere, l’armadillo è un piccolo animale dotato di corazza che vive sotto terra e si ciba di insetti.
Per sopperire alla scarsità della sua vista, l’armadillo si affida al senso dell’olfatto assai sviluppato, arrivando a percepire gli odori anche a 20 cm dal suolo.
“Piccolo munito di armatura”, questo è il nome che i conquistadores spagnoli affibbiarono nel XVI secolo al curioso animaletto, le cui dimensioni oscillano tra i 13 e i 150 cm.
Ad oggi, si contano 21 specie di armadillo esistenti, con una palette di colori che va dal nero al rosa, passando per il giallo e il marrone. Tutte le specie, nessuna esclusa, dormono dalle 16 alle 18 ore al giorno, posizionandolo al 4° posto nella classifica degli animali più dormiglioni al mondo.

Il freddo gli è fatale
Le scarse riserve di grasso e il metabolismo basso lo rendono un animale da clima caldo. Avendo una temperatura corporea tra i 33 e i 36°C, l’armadillo non può sopravvivere al freddo impietoso.
Una riproduzione fuori dal comune
Grazie alla cosiddetta “implantazione differita” le femmine di armadillo possono rimandare le loro gravidanze a un periodo climaticamente più propizio, conservando lo zigote concepito per qualche mese, permettendogli di impiantarsi nell’utero in base alle sue esigenze.
Dopo una gestazione di circa 5 mesi, gli armadilli possono partorire fino a 15 cuccioli alla volta, sprovvisti della corazza che si indurisce solo dopo diverse settimane.
Apnee subacquee
Nonostante sappiano nuotare molto bene, gli armadilli devono ingoiare molta aria per riuscire a restare a galla, dato che il loro peso tende a mandarli a fondo. Per fortuna riescono a trattenere il respiro fino a 6 minuti, permettendogli di attraversare le rive di laghi e fiumi senza troppe difficoltà.
Lo sfruttamento
In passato, l’uomo ha sfruttato la corazza di questo piccolo animale per fabbricare il charango, una specie di mandolino sudamericano il cui legno veniva lavorato insieme al guscio dell’armadillo. Per fortuna questa usanza sta cadendo in disuso per preservare la vita del grazioso animaletto.
Aspettativa di vita
Allo stato brado, l’armadillo vive tra i 4 e i 7 anni, mentre in cattività può raggiungere anche i 15 anni d’età.
