Basta coi cliché: “Girl Power” e la rivoluzione tra i banchi di scuola

Ormai ci ho fatto il callo.

Adocchio un libro per ragazzi, la trama sembra carina, lo compro, lo leggo e puntualmente resto delusa dalle solite cose sbagliate che succedono nei romanzi Young Adult, rimproverandomi per essere cascata ancora una volta nella trappola di una copertina accattivante e di un abstract ben scritto.

Eppure a volte peschi la balena bianca, quel romanzo che ti attira, ti fa sorridere, ma soprattutto riflettere su tematiche importanti, senza mai farti arrabbiare per messaggi sbagliati e potenzialmente pericolosi. E quel romanzo è Girl Power, un inno alla libertà e all’uguaglianza, scritto dall’autrice americana Jennifer Mathieu e pubblicato in Italia da Mondadori.

Perché Girl Power è diverso dai soliti romanzi per adolescenti? Perché presenta messaggi positivi, non soltanto per le ragazze, ma per chiunque si prenda la briga di dargli una possibilità. È la storia di Vivian, una liceale come tante, che dopo l’ennesimo episodio di sessismo a scuola si ispira al movimento femminista delle Riot Girls per creare una fanzine anonima da distribuire nei bagni delle ragazze. Vivian sprona le sue compagne a reagire pacificamente ai soprusi, a riflettere sulle ingiustizie che, in quanto donne, subiscono da tutta una vita, e le sprona a indignarsi. E a poco a poco tra i banchi di scuola il cambiamento avviene, fino a scatenare una vera e propria rivoluzione.

La trama, pura e semplice, trasmette molta grinta, perché si portano alla luce questioni che sono all’ordine del giorno per le donne di ogni età, ma con una delicatezza unica e con grande rispetto per le diversità.

Girl Power parla di molestie sessuali, fisiche e verbali, e di discriminazione. Mette in evidenza quanto sia grave che ancora oggi si dia alle donne la colpa di un abuso o di attenzioni sbagliate, come se fosse colpa di una minigonna o di una maglietta attillata se certi uomini si prendono liberà che non dovrebbero.

Il romanzo insegna che è giusto indignarsi e protestare, ma non lo fa in modo aggressivo, non punta il dito contro tutti gli uomini chiamandoli maiali. D’altronde è questo il femminismo. Il vero femminismo non crede che le donne siano superiori agli uomini, ma che siano loro eguali e, perciò, meritevoli di essere trattate con pari rispetto e dignità.

Non mancano, in questa storia, esempi di uomini positivi: il nonno di Vivian, per esempio, e anche il nuovo studente per cui si prende una cotta, Seth. Ecco un’altra cosa che distingue Girl Power dalla solita solfa dei romanzetti cliché: non c’è una romanticizzazione di atteggiamenti sbagliati. Sapete di che parlo, dell’uomo che non deve chiedere mai, fascinoso, distaccato, manipolatore e possessivo, il principe azzurro che di solito di azzurro non ha proprio nulla. Il ragazzo che ti pedina perché «gli mancavi troppo», che ti impedisce di avere amici maschi perché «tu sei mia». Secondo il cliché è sexy, è romantico. No! È sbagliato.

In Girl Power la protagonista non mette da parte le amicizie una volta coinvolta in una relazione, perché non si smette di essere individui quando ci si fidanza con qualcuno. Non sarebbe giusto, non sarebbe sano. Troviamo invece tanta grinta tra le ragazze del romanzo, sorellanza e affetto, donne che non si contendono le attenzioni degli uomini, ma che fanno fronte comune contro le ingiustizie. Donne che si alleano, invece di combattersi, com’è giusto che sia.

Dunque, questo romanzo è un must da leggere, non soltanto per le ragazze, ma per tutti. Non importano il genere, l’età o l’orientamento sessuale: la libertà di parola, l’uguaglianza, l’individualità e l’accettazione sono temi che possono e devono interessare tutti. Basta tacere, basta chiudere un occhio. E, per favore, basta cliché!
